Key Laboratory of Ecosystem Network Observation and Modeling,

Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research (IGSNRR), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

Executive director of Yucheng Comprehensive Experiment Station, CAS.

Research Areas

1. Hydrogeochemistry and stable isotope hydrology. Combining stable isotopes (Oxygen-18 and Deuterium, nitrogen and carbon isotope), water chemistry, groundwater age dating methods (CFCs, 3H, 14C and so on), to identify hydrological processes and nutrient cycle of agroecosystem.

2. Based on long-term observation at YCES-CAS such as Eddy covariance system, Green House Gases (CO2, N2O, CH4) emission, soil microbiology, to understand the interaction between water and energy, carbon and nitrogen in agroecosystem and mechanism.

3. Survey the surface water, ground water and soil profiles in large scale, measure the water quality, trace elements, organic pollutants such as pesticide and herbicide, to assess the environmental effect of agroecosystem.

4. Hydrology, environment, and ecosystem changes in the Yellow River Delta, the processes and mechanism. Interaction of land-delta-ocean, fresh water-groundwater-sea water, agroecosystem- wetland-coastal zone.

5. International cooperation with African regions, such as Pakistan, Tajikistan, etc. Mainly research on food security in African drylands and the use of models to predict future food trends.

UNEP IEMP
About UNEP-IEMP

Co-sponsored by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and supported by the Government of China, UNEP - International Ecosystem Management Partnership (UNEP-IEMP) was officially launched in November 2011 during a High-Level International Forum on Ecosystem Management and Green Economy. It is UNEP’s first collaborative programme in the South and for the South promoting integration of Ecosystem Management and the Green Economy.

IEMP Initiatives

UNEP-IEMP's mandate of synthesizing science findings for decision-making on ecosystem management is supported by three interrelated initiatives:

1. Monitoring and Capacity Building

UNEP-IEMP is undertaking comprehensive stocktaking and assessment of global ecosystem monitoring and research capacity. Meanwhile, it has also started its assessment of ecosystem management and the best ways to increase capacity for ecosystem research and management in Africa..

2. Integrated Knowledge Management

UNEP-IEMP is designing a database to share methods, tools and knowledge of ecosystem management in developing countries for decision making. The database will support key regional assessments of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES)

3. Science for Policy

UNEP-IEMP has begun synthesizing leading-edge science to support policy setting. By drafting a number of policy papers and organizing high-level fora, UNEP-IEMP advocates the role of ecosystem management in a green economy. In addition, it supports China’s South-South cooperation programmes on ecosystem management and climate change

CAS-TWAS President’s Fellowship Programme For PhD Candidates from Developing Countries

According to a new agreement between the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and TWAS, the academy of sciences for the developing world, up to 140 students/scholars per year from the developing world will be sponsored to travel to China for up to four years’ of PhD study and research.

The CAS-TWAS President’s Fellowship Programme provides students/scholars from developing countries with the opportunity to pursue PhDs at University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS), the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) and/or institutes of CAS around China.

Under the terms of the new CAS-TWAS agreement, TWAS will be responsible for providing round-trip travel support for 50 awardees each year to and from China, or for providing one way travel support for 80 awardees each year to China. TWAS will make active efforts to secure additional funds to cover more awardees for travel supports. In addition, TWAS will also cover visa related expenses and a contribution to excess luggage fees for stays in China of more than 12 months.

CAS will be responsible for a monthly payment to cover accommodation and living expenses.

Successful applicants will receive a monthly stipend (including living expenses, local travel expenses and health insurance) of RMB 7,000 (approx. USD 1,100) or RMB 8,000 (approx. 1,250) from CAS through UCAS, depending on whether he/she has passed a qualification test arranged by UCAS for all PhD candidates after admission.

The Fellowship awardee who fails the qualification test twice within one year will face the consequences including:

1. termination of his/her Fellowship;
2. discontinuity of his/her PhD study at UCAS;
3. getting a diploma of completion

All the procedures will adhere to UCAS regulations and rules.

Awardees of the Fellowship will be exempted from tuition fees.

The funding duration of the Program is 4 years, divided into:

Maximum 1 year study of courses and participation in centralized training at the International College of UCAS (IC-UCAS) on Beijing campus, including 4 months compulsory courses in Chinese Language and Culture.
